Week 1

  1. Introduction to Big Data

Discussed about what actually is the Big Data and how it can be implemented to real business

What is Big Data? In the past, Big Data tend to be simply the collection of customer data. However, there are something more than collection of data, it is actually a quantitative measurement of customers’ needs which is different from the data that were more qualitative and hard to measure. In addition, quantitative data is not the whole part of Big Data, instead people should think out of the box and take advantage of other data that were considered insignificant. For example, when discussing about driving a car, people tend to focus only on the structural aspect such as seating and handles. However, there are other aspects that can discussed as well such as security and safety that can lead to the improvement of customer satisfaction.

How can Big Data be implemented to Business? There are basically three kind of data that can be collected which can improve the overall business strategy. The three data is quantitative, area and time data.

  1. Quantitative data: The quantitative data is the example of the smart watch device in which the company gather numerical data such as blood pressure, walking span and heart beat level that can used to provide insight to companies to decide on the future business that the company can participate in
  2. Area: The are data is important because customer’s life patterns and needs differ from where they live. For example, the customer usage of the product in Seoul can be different from the customer who use the product in Busan. Therefore, the business strategy and operation should have a different approach from where the customer is located.
  3. Time span: Example given as the review of restaurants. The positive and negative review actually different based on the time. In restaurants, the type of customer and service are quite different from the time span. Therefore, the company can check the time data to efficiently arrange the resource and look at what kind of business strategy can be imposed based on different time period.

The Duality of Big Data (Implication)?

According to what is discussed about Big Data, the term Big Data sounds somewhat positive to customers. However, it is like a sword that can be used to protect others or used to harm others. The famous American drama Mr. Robot portrays well the danger related with privacy infringement and the effort to protect the hacking and danger from happening. Big Data can be used as a Big Brother to corporations. Fortunately, there are several efforts to use these Big Data solely for the purpose to improve customer satisfaction. The incidence of the Fitbit, a wearable device in the United States, prove that the data tracking and GPS can be used as a hard evidence to solve crimes and can contribute to making the society more secure.

B. Business Analytics

What is business analytics? the application, tools, technologies and techniques that can be used to gather and store data.

The difference between the traditional business analytics and modern business analytics

  1. Traditional business analytics: Gather data from what is called the data warehouse and apply it to business (performance management, enterprise and data mining)
  2. Modern business analytics: Not just the data warehouse that focus on the operation, inner business analytics but also on the external business ( streaming) as well.

How can company use business analytics to improve its corporate strategy?

There are several functions of business that has conflict and face the problem of how to implement its corporate strategy. The business analytics such as the balanced scorecard are used to improve the KPI and fulfill the needs of different perspectives such as financial and customer perspective with provision of insights to efficient allocate which perspectives to concentrate more to obtain the overall strategic objectives.

C. Data warehouse

The data warehouse is used in the purpose of transaction such as SAP and ERP but also it is used to store data and use it as a record. Data warehouse is used in different industries; real estate, school, retail and other industries that need to store and manage data. From the Data warehouse is used to analyze and find solutions to a problem that is addressed. The kind of data warehouse that is used to analyze these problems is called the OLAP. The aggregate data that is stored and used is called the OLTP thus to analyze and to use the OLAP system there needs a OLTP system.

Risks about data warehouse

How to organize the data warehouse is really important. Simply storing the data is not that important because there are noises in the data and the social network services such as Facebook and Instagram always face the problem of identity theft and users that are considered insignificant and just contain space in the data warehouse and make the analysis much more difficult. Therefore, what is important is to create a specific protocol that can differentiate what kind of data to use and what to abandon so that there is an efficient analysis of data. In addition, the problem is not just related with what kind of data is stored in the data warehouse. There are external factors that should be considered when talking about the risk of the data warehouse. The drama Mr. Robot, the main character Elliot Anderson hacks the data warehouse of the conglomerate company E-Corp and has taken advantage in its downfall. No data is safe and when the data is stored into one data warehouse, the data can be much more expose and take advantage of. Therefore, due to data warehouse, the security precaution is getting much more important because it is really hard to find for Plan B. All of the data which is the asset can be easily destroyed due to the hacking that takes place.

D. Lessons about the talks from Hans Rosling "The best stats you've ever seen"

1. Projections over time: comparison between South Korea and Brazil (South Korea's growth is faster than Brazil)

2. Overview Big Picture:  need to drill down data to have an accurate result (Subsaharian African Region is poor is wrong because there are huge economic gap between African countries in the Subsaharian regions)

3. Appropriate Visualization: using these differentials between time and location
4. Contents and Background: need to show why it is happening

E. Conclusion

The emergence of Big Data and the development of information technology had improved the way of people's life regarding data management. However, if there is a good aspect, there are always problems related with it. The drama Mr. Robot and the privacy issue of Facebook shows well the problem that the society can face regarding data management and analysis. Therefore, company and other institutions need to take effort in providing the solution of the problem and make the society more secure.
